A flat $50/month plan is a rounding error in San Francisco and a fifth of a developer's monthly budget in Lagos or Manila. Charging the same price everywhere doesn't make pricing fair, it just prices you out of most of the world.
The Case for Regional Pricing
Software has zero marginal cost of distribution, so volume in a lower-income market is pure upside. Selling 100 subscriptions at $15/month in India generates $1,500 in MRR. Selling 2 subscriptions at $50/month generates $100, and leaves 98 high-intent users looking for a local alternative.
The purchasing power gap is real and large. World Bank data puts 2025 GDP per capita at about $2,700 in India versus about $90,000 in the US, roughly a 33x difference (data.worldbank.org). Charging identical prices across both markets creates an artificial barrier that has nothing to do with how much someone values your product.
The payoff for fixing this is well documented. Paddle's own data shows customers in high willingness-to-pay markets like the Nordics pay 28% more than US customers for the same product, while localizing to native currency lifted conversion 11% for one of their customers, TeamGantt. Enabling local payment methods lifted their checkout conversion from 4.3 to 6.5 percentage points, a 51% relative gain (paddle.com/blog).
The hard part isn't deciding whether to localize pricing, it's doing it without manual spreadsheets of country tiers or opening yourself up to VPN arbitrage.
Two Approaches

Strategy A: Dynamic Strategy B: Banding
(Direct PPP Multiplier) (Fixed Price Buckets)
| |
Price = Base × ppp × FX Select Tier by PPP Range
Continuous dynamic pricing applies the raw buying-power multiplier directly. A $50/mo plan with a buying_power of 0.40 becomes $20/mo. Good for automated, self-serve checkouts with a strike-through discount banner.
Tiered banding groups countries into a few fixed brackets:
- Tier 1 (ppp ≥ 0.85): full price, $50/mo
- Tier 2 (ppp 0.50–0.84): 30% off, $35/mo
- Tier 3 (ppp < 0.50): 60% off, $20/mo
Banding is easier to put on a public pricing page and easier to explain to finance.

Defending the Discount
The obvious risk with regional pricing is a user in a high-income country turning on a $5 VPN to grab the emerging-market rate. asn.threat_level handles this directly:

Apply Regional PPP Fall back to Baseline
or Banded Pricing USD / Standard Price
Normal traffic gets the discount. Detected VPNs, proxies, or datacenter IPs fall back to baseline pricing automatically, no manual review needed.
Why This Beats Manual Tables
| Approach | Setup | Fraud Protection | Global Reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat global rate | Low | N/A | Very low |
| Manual IP tables | High, constant upkeep | None | Medium |
| Unprotected PPP API | Low | Poor | High, but leaky |
| GVI (PPP + threat_level) | Low, one API call | Built in | Maximum |
